More crafty stuff!

So for X-mas this year, I've decided to handmake all of the holiday cards I send out and a large portion of my gifts. I think this'll cut down a lot on how much everything costs, as well as make it a lot more fun for me! Plus, everyone loves a gift that was handmade. :)

I can't show pictures of anything yet, since I don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone, but suffice it to say that I'm very excited and I hope everyone likes their gifts and/or cards in a month and a half!

In other news, yesterday was Dylan's and my 6-month anniversary! So all you people out there that bet we wouldn't make it this far(I hope there's not many of you...), you just lost. ;)

Crafty.

So in my spare time of not having a job, I've recently been making little arts and crafts projects to try and stay busy. First, I made a scarf that didn't require any knitting. I found the directions on marthastewart.com. Then I made a Motherhood card for my cousin, because she just gave birth to a baby girl! Then Dylan got sick, so I made him a Get Well card. And after that, I decided to try baking, so I made some Ghirardelli Chocolate Truffles with Bailey's. They were delicious! As you can tell, I've been pretty busy playing Susie Homemaker.

This is the scarf I made.

And here's the Motherhood card.

Get Well card for Husband.

Chocolate Truffles mid-process. No pics of the finished truffles, sadly. I didn't think to take a picture before they all got eaten.

Anybody have any suggestions on what I should make next?
Burn After Reading

My life is a Coen Brothers movie. I realized this today after Dylan and I went to see Burn After Reading last night. I fill my life with the most banal moments possible, and nothing ever comes of it.

Hi, my name is Kristin, and I am trivial.

And what's worse, I complain about this banality in my online journal.

I think I have one of these existential crisis thingies every year right around my birthday. Not sure what that signifies.
Jade.

So I've been reading this book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman for a class I'm in, and there's one passage I really liked that I wanted to post in here. Postman's book is about the utter irrelevance and abundance of information on television, now even more so with the brand new technology of the internet, and how this all started with the telegraph. Here's the passage:

"...The telegraph may have made the country into 'one neighborhood,' but it was a peculiar one, populated by strangers who knew nothing but the most superficial facts about each other.
Since we live today in just such a neighborhood (now sometimes called a 'global village'), you may get a sense of what is meant by context-free information by asking yourself the following question: How often does it occur that information provided you on morning radio or television, or in the morning newspaper, causes you to alter your plans for the day, or to take some action you would not otherwise have taken, or provides insight into some problem you are required to solve?...Most of our daily news is inert, consisting of information that gives us something to talk about but cannot lead to any meaningful action.
...You may get a sense of what this means by asking yourself another series of questions: What steps do you plan to take to reduce the conflict in the Middle East? Or the rates of inflation, crime and unemployment? What are your plans for preserving the environment or reducing the risk of nuclear war? What do you plan to do about NATO, OPEC, the CIA, affirmative action, and the monstrous treatment of the Baha'is in Iran? I shall take the liberty of answering for you: You plan to do nothing about them. You may, of course, cast a ballot for someone who claims to have some plans, as well as the power to act. But this you can only do once every two or four years by giving one hour of your time, hardly a satisfying means of expressing the broad range of opinions you hold. Voting, we might even say, is the next to last refuge of the politically impotent."

Ironic, however, that I am posting this excerpt in an online journal... Seriously, though, why do we think about these things? Yes, Heath Ledger is dead, but a thousand other people also die each day, many from starvation, poor living conditions, or from living in a country of constant conflict. What does his death do to me that any other death would not? The only effect it might have is a delay in the release date of the new Batman movie, another form of useless entertainment.

And how many of you read, or even skimmed over, that passage? We add people to our friends list and read their journals to see what's new in their lives, but the moment they post something longer than a couple paragraphs, our short attention spans are quickly diverted to something more exciting or flashy. Television has trained us to be narcissistic, impatient, and concerned only with trivia. Princess Adelaide's whooping cough. Lindsay's new stint in rehab.

You might call me jaded or disillusioned, but I say quite the opposite. For once, I can actually see.

I hate narcissism. It's why people are so obsessed with the media world. It's because it's so user-centric; it's all made for you. No matter what you're interested in, there is a channel on TV for it, an online forum on the web discussing it, and at least 10 pages of google-found links related to the topic, and they're all put there just for you. The real world was not put here for you, or for anyone else. It is just there. Go to Saskatchewan, Canada, in the middle of nowhere, where your cellphone doesn't work and there are no humans for miles, and you will realize that the real world was not made for your amusement.

I don't want to be here.

Finals Week! So much has changed in the past quarter, and yet I still feel like I'm in exactly the same place. Like I've taken a thousand steps in the right direction only to end up right where I was when I started.

Single again. I'm starting to think monogamy's just not for me. Maybe I'm a freak. I kind of want to be able to settle down. I'd always thought that "when I met the right person," I would instantly just stop wanting to look at other people. I'm coming to realize that that's never going to happen. It's going to be a struggle every time. But that "when I meet the right person," the struggle will be worth it. The time will come eventually, I guess. This quarter has been all about learning patience.

I cleaned my room today, right before my Calculus final. It's so refreshing, and I think it prepared me infinitely better than studying could have done. I needed to be clear, organized in both surroundings and mind. I feel a lot better now.

I'm spending Thanksgiving in California this year. It will be the first time I'll have shared this holiday with my cousins in as long as I can remember. Hell, we haven't even lived on the same side of the country in over 15 years... And we're going to Disneyland for Black Friday. (This may sound awesome, which it is in itself, but it's Black Friday--I want to go shopping!)

Oh, and I'll be driving my new car back up to RIT at the end of break; I'm so excited! It's an '05 Dodge Neon, silver that looks like this:

This will definitely help my mood. I feel so trapped when I don't have a mode of transportation at my fingertips at all times.

Alright, back to doing... oh yeah, NOTHING, because it's finals week and I'm finally free! WIN!

How does he know I've felt this way?

Background Info: Angie is the floating lady of the play’s title. Her failed relationship with the magician is the subject of the play, and as she is suspended (he thinks by his will, actually by hers) she recounts their relationship.

"Oh yes, I loved you. So many things. Safety, words exchanged, letters. I would cough and the phone would ring, and it would be you, asking if I was alright. You could imitate me and make me laugh. You would buy me little things. When I made spaghetti for you, you were so grateful; "Pavarotti himself couldn’t have made better spaghetti." We were at a restaurant and a woman came up to you, flirting, and right there in front of her, you laced your fingers between mine, showing her who you loved.

"But the most powerful was the tennis shoe. My God, I cried. After our week in the tropics--where we collapsed, ended--a month later, not having spoken, you sent me a tennis shoe. I looked at it for days, not knowing why you sent it. Then one morning, barefoot, not knowing why, I slipped my foot into it. Sand. Grains of sand still in it from seven thousand miles away; each one the size of a memory. I will love you forever for that second. I cried. I cried for us.

"But when we fell apart, you didn’t understand that I would be back. That if you let me have my life, I would be with you forever. But everything you said and did, every touch at night in bed, every kindness, every loving comment had this sentence attached: maybe now she’ll love me. And it made you weak. And if I’m not going to love someone strong, why love at all?"

-Angie, Patter for the Floating Lady, written by Steve Martin.

This has been my favorite monologue for quite some time now. I've never read the whole play, but if it's as good as the monologue itself (and Steve Martin's other work), it should definitely be on my list.

I've got a lot to recount (went to California for a week!), but no time right now. This'll do for the moment.

Ocean City makes national headlines!

Wow, I know Ocean City wanted to be a nationally-known resort town, but I don't think this is how they wanted to do it...

In case you didn't see the news, this story came out today. Her house is on 29th Street and Sunset (I work at Higgins Crab House on 31st Street), and there were FBI people and helicopters and everything all over the place all day today. Thankfully traffic wasn't terrible, though. My manager said that woman used to work at Higgins about 5 years ago, and she seemed pretty normal, not weird or creepy or anything. He said he even got on camera (he's behind a woman they're interviewing) at the press conference. So exciting!

She gave birth to a child, and says she tried to flush it down the toilet?! Even though it was stillborn, I can't believe someone would do that. That's just really disgusting...

In other news, Eric and I broke up. We were together for 4 months. Maybe now I'll have a chance to be single for a while. Last time I was single, I lasted for a whole month! Here's going for at least two months this time.

All of my friends are traveling overseas a lot lately, it seems. Jay went to France for a few weeks, Bev is leaving for Italy on Wednesday, Jason'll be in France for the whole school year, Renee went to Denmark, and I never talk to Chris, but he's in China or something right now, and Matt went to Italy, I never talk to him either... Oh, and Brian went to Ireland and Cassie went to England! There, I think that's everyone. I think maybe I should leave the country on a random excursion as well! It's been a while since my last trip required a passport... But I leave for California in 6 days, so that's good.

I've been working in Ocean City all summer as a hostess at a Crab House for those who don't know. I wanted to get a job as a server, but everyone's waitstaff was full already, so a hostess I have been. It's alright--I make $8.50 an hour, my managers like me, I get bonuses for July 4th and Labor Day, and I never have to work before noon.

I've found a lot of new music I've liked in the past couple months. Just off the top of my head, I've gotten into Amy Winehouse, Silversun Pickups, Man Man, and Fountains of Wayne.

I feel like there's a lot I wanted to do this summer, and I didn't do ANY of it, and it's almost over. Rawr.

Speaking of almost over, so is this entry..... Okay, done!

It's calming, but at the same time, it always brings me down.

A whole bunch of PSP-ers and I went out to Tandoor last night and it was delicious and a lot of fun. It reminded me I should eat Indian food more, and definitely learn some more sign language. And our waiter gave me his number, lol.

I heart Google's homepage themes. I'm always entertained to see where the little fox is going to be when I refresh the page.

Oh, and I learned that I am not allowed to walk into Bath and Body Works. I spend way too much money in there. ;)

"I never think that people die. They just go to department stores."
--Andy Warhol

I feel rather useless as of late. Coincidentally, new lj layout - check it out!

This weekend is Photohunt. Glorious things are planned. :)

I haven't gone to sleep yet. It's 8 am. This may or may not be a bad thing.

Concrete summer plans would be nice.

At least I don't feel alone.

Haven't updated in a couple weeks...

Lots o' stuff has been happening...

Classwork sucks, work is good, house is good, love life is interesting...

Parties are becoming more frequent. Sleep is becoming less frequent...

Can you tell I like to use ellipses?

Running out of time.

Have become extremely introspective as of late. Not sure if that's good or bad yet...

Learning a lot about myself. I am for the government subsidization of art programs.

Random... Coffee...
